Meet Stan & Shelly
Grosz
Business Advisors, Real Estate Agents.. Lifelong Entrepreneurs
Are two heads better than one? Absolutely—especially when they belong to a husband-and-wife team whose talents, experience, and instincts complement each other like coffee and spreadsheets. Meet Stan and Shelly Grosz, partners in life and in business for over 40 years. With a shared history of building successful small businesses—buying them, growing them, and eventually selling them—they understand firsthand what it takes to navigate the world of business ownership. Now, as licensed real estate agents and business advisors, they bring their double dose of know-how to help you sell your business or buy your dream business.
A Down-to-Earth Beginning Stan and Shelly both grew up on farms in California’s San Joaquin Valley, where hard work wasn’t a choice—it was a way of life. They attended Fresno State, both earning bachelor’s degrees in Ag Business, and got married at 21. Shelly pursued a career in finance. Crunching numbers is a vital part of any business, but not that interesting to read about. For that reason, we’ll turn the spotlight on Stan, whose life took a more unconventional turn. In addition to farming, Stan stumbled into a niche career you probably didn’t know existed: cow photography. Yep—it’s a thing. He started out helping a photographer who specialized in cattle—a man who would become his mentor. Breeders would hire professional photographers to capture the perfect shot of a prized cow or bull. The photographer had to have both a camera and a deep understanding of bovine behavior.
From Cows to Cameras Stan entered the cow photography world by developing and printing his mentor’s film in a makeshift garage lab (not exactly what you'd expect to find in rural California—but in 1980, "meth lab" wasn’t the first thing that came to mind). He also assisted his mentor in the field. When his mentor retired and offered to sell the business to Stan and Shelly, they jumped at the opportunity—but they’d just bought a house and only had half the down payment. Turned down by their local bank, they turned to family. With Stan’s dad cosigning, they got the loan and made the business their own. They were 26 years old at the time. Stan had the eye, the patience, and the cattle sense to become an expert. Shelly managed the backend of the business while working full time for Price Giffen at the Cantua Ranch in Five Points. This was before Photoshop, which meant that getting the perfect background involved physically taking cows to iconic locations all over the world—Washington Monument, Golden Gate Bridge, châteaux and castles in Europe, and more. You can only imagine the logistics of traveling with a cow and getting it to pose like a model. But Stan made it work and quickly became the nation’s premier cow photographer, creating a thriving business.
The Horn Photo Chapter As Stan’s cow photography business grew, he became a regular at a small shop in Fresno called Horn Photo, established in 1937. In 1991, the owners wanted to retire, and they encouraged Stan and Shelly to take it over. It made perfect sense—owning the source of his materials would lower costs and open new doors. In a poetic twist, they returned to the same bank—and the same loan officer—that had once denied them. She remembered Stan and Shelly, looked at how they had grown the cow photography business many times over, and gladly approved a loan to purchase Horn Photo.
From Modest Shop to Industry Leader Over the next three decades, Stan and Shelly transformed Horn Photo into a thriving retail hub. Stan transitioned out of the cow photography business and channeled his energy full-time into Horn Photo. Together, Stan and Shelly grew the business— relocating four times into bigger and better spaces—and outlasted every other locally owned camera store in the valley, from Bakersfield to Stockton. Their success stemmed from smart innovation, exceptional service, and an intuitive understanding of both business and people. Horn Photo became nationally known and widely respected among independent photo retailers for its creative approach and loyal following. Their personalities infused the store, and it became more than a business—it became family. Staff reflected their values, customers felt at home, and Horn Photo became a standout example of how a “mom-and-pop” shop could still thrive in an environment of box stores and online shopping.
A New Chapter By 2022, with grand-kids arriving and their energy focused on family, Stan and Shelly decided it was time to sell the business and begin a new adventure. They wanted to go back to their farming roots and bought a 20-acre parcel west of Fresno, developing it into a cherry farm where they could make memories with their grandchildren. Stan and Shelly turned to Transworld Business Advisors to sell Horn Photo at a price that was both rewarding for them and attractive to the buyer. Today, Horn Photo remains a successful industry leader under new ownership that has preserved the spirit and values Stan and Shelly built. But retirement didn’t last long. Soap operas weren’t their thing. Neither were birdhouses or quilting. Pickleball sounded fun, but knee and hip replacements didn’t. The truth is: Stan and Shelly are business-people at heart.
